Christ, our Shepherd

“My sheep hear my voice, and I know them, and they follow me.”

John 10:27 KJV

The Psalmist likens God’s people to sheep, “we are His people, the sheep of His pastures”, Psalm 100:3 KJV, & He, The Lord, is our Shepherd, “we shall not want”, Psalm 23:1 KJV.

It is He, Christ, that leads us to the still, calm waters, that we may drink of the Holy Spirit & be refreshed, just as the shepherd leads his flock to the clear waters to drink and satisfy their thirst. It is He, Christ, that maketh us to lie down in green pastures, as the shepherd leads his flock to the lush pastures of the evergreen hills. He, Christ Jesus, “shall feed His flock like a Shepherd, He shall gather the lambs with His arms and carry them in His bosom…” Isaiah 40:11 KJV

He goes before us and makes plain the path that we should walk, as the shepherd goes before his flock and guides them unto their sheepfold. Christ, our Good Shepherd, is leading us step by step unto the “sheepfold” of Heaven.

“I am the good Shepherd, and know my sheep, and am known of mine... he that entereth in by the door is the shepherd of the sheep… the sheep hear his voice: and he calleth his own sheep by name, and leadeth them out. And when he putteth forth his own sheep, he goeth before them, and the sheep follow him: for they know his voice.

John 10:14,2-4 KJV

Christ knows us all individually, even the hairs on our heads are all numbered, Luke 12:7 KJV. He speaks to our hearts in a still small voice, as He spoke to the Prophet Elijah upon Mt. Horeb, and being His sheep, we hear and know His voice, and follow that voice as it leads us, step by step, glory unto glory, along the path that leads unto eternal life.

“I have called thee by thy name; thou art mine.”

Isaiah 43:1 KJV

Let us be obedient sheep, and follow His voice as He has called us, for our reward shall be great in Heaven.

As much as He is our Shepherd, He is also the Lamb of God, slain for our sins, therefore, He is our example in all things. Let us live as He lived and walk as He walked, for,“he that saith he abideth in Him ought himself also so to walk, even as he walked” 1 John 2:6 KJV.

Christ loves us, and takes no pleasure in our destruction, Ezekiel 33:11 KJV, this is why He is calling us away from a life of sin, that we may gain eternal life through Him. For says Christ, “so will I seek out my sheep, and will deliver them out of all places where they have been scattered in the cloudy and dark day. I will bring them out from the people, and gather them from the countries… I will feed my flock, and I will cause them to lie down, saith the Lord GOD. I will seek that which was lost, and bring again that which was driven away.”, Ezekiel 11:12-13,15-16 KJV.

Again He says, “they shall no more be a prey to the heathen, neither shall the beast of the land devour them; but they shall dwell safely, and none shall make them afraid...they shall be no more consumed with hunger in the land… ye my flock, the flock of my pasture, are men, and I am your God, saith the Lord GOD. Ezekiel 34:28-29,31 KJV.

Unfortunately today, in the Christian Church we have so many divisions and much confusion, one doctrine here and another there but ultimately Christ has one Church, one Bride, one body of believer, one flock; they that are obedient unto His word, Matthew 4:4 KJV, and follow “the Lamb, whithersoever He goeth” Revelation 14:4 KJV. They believe in the Bible as the inspired word of God and live their lives according to that word, unlike modern Christianity today, where many are quite happy to elevate culture and tradition above God’s Word.

Christ says, “there shall be one fold, and one shepherd, again He says, “I will set up one shepherd over them”, John 10:18 KJV, Ezekiel 34:23 KJV.

“When the Son of man shall come in his glory, and all the holy angels with Him, then shall He sit upon the throne of His glory: And before Him shall be gathered all nations: and He shall separate them one from another, as a shepherd divideth his sheep from the goats: And He shall set the sheep on His right hand, but the goats on the left. Then shall the King say unto them on His right hand, Come, ye blessed of My Father, inherit the kingdom prepared for you from the foundation of the world….Then shall He say also unto them on the left hand, Depart from Me, ye cursed, into everlasting fire, prepared for the devil and his angels” Matthew 25:31-34,41 KJV.

Therefore, friends, my question to you this day is this, when the Son of Man cometh, will we be on the right side with the sheep or the left side with the goats?

“Wherefore let him that thinketh he standeth take heed lest he fall”, 1 Corinthians 10:12 KJV
